The Captain

A well-known character of early Aireys Inlet was former seaman Carl J. Carlgren, who lived in a small slab cabin in Hartley street.

The Captain was always popular at social functions, providing entertainment with his accordion, violin or old cylindrical phonograph. His detailed models of sailing ships were admired by the youngsters of the district.

The Captain often drove his horse and jinker down to the hotel. After a long session, it was claimed that the horse navigated the way home, along the narrow dirt track through the forest. The Captain died in 1947, aged 91.
